When there is something that needs to get done and we don’t do what needs to get done, it will keep on dragging on. Eventually, the task or whatever it is that we need to get done will catch up to us. We can only put something off for so long before it actually needs to get done. Putting something off only makes it worse on us because it means we are procrastinating and putting unnecessary stress on ourselves. If you can relate, keep on reading…
I have heard “I put the pro in procrastination”, and I definitely thought I did when I was in college. Especially when it came to getting assignments done or studying for an exam. But now that I think about it, with all the stress that comes from being in school, it only made me feel more stressed because in the back of my head I was always thinking about what I needed to get done. So even when I wasn’t doing the assignment I was still thinking about it and not even enjoying whatever else I was doing. Sometimes there are legitimate reasons that get in the way of us getting something done, but other times it’s because we don’t feel like doing it for one reason or another. We may put something off due to fear, laziness, lack of discipline, lack of focus, etc…There are so many different reasons why we may be putting something off. I found myself doing this recently and the Lord showed me that when I do this, the task that I needed to get done ends up becoming a burden, or a heavy load.
The Lord showed me that when I put off what I know needs to get done it becomes something I carry around and it becomes heavy. What once was supposed to be an easy task becomes something hard and heavy. And once it gets to that point, I will avoid it even more. So does that mean we just simply do it? The short answer is yes. Lol but I know from personal experience that it’s not as easy as “just doing it.” I wish it was that simple. But in a sense it is that simple. Lol
To avoid getting to the point of being burdened we need to (of course) rely on the Lord, His Word tells us:
Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. Psalms 55:22 NKJV
To cast something is to throw something forcefully. When we throw something we are getting rid of it. The Lord wants us to do that, to let go of the heavy burdens and instead give them to Him. This doesn’t exempt us from our responsibilities, but it does give us the reassurance that we can get it done with His help and that we are not alone when trying to complete the things we keep putting off. There will always be tasks or situations that are simpler and easier to do than others, but even with the more difficult tasks we can trust that He will be with us and that we are not alone. We have His help which is the best help and we also have people around us that can help us.
We get burdened when we are trying to do it all and without the help of those around us. Our main source of help and strength is the Lord, but He has also placed people in our lives so that we may help one another. When Moses was leading the Israelites the burden became too heavy so he took His concerns to the Lord. The Lord told him:.
“Then I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone.” Numbers 11:17 NKJV
In this verse, we see a few things. First, that the Spirit of the Lord was upon Moses, helping him guide God’s people. Second, that the Lord would put that same Spirit upon the ones that were to help Moses. Lastly, that the people would help Moses to bear the burden. We have the same help available to us today. We have a helper, the Holy Spirit, He will help us in our time of need or weakness. And we also have people that God has allowed in our lives to help us, and also people that we are to help. The Lord has called us to help one another, so accept the help that comes your way. One day you too will be helping those around you but if you’re in a place where you are feeling burdened, it is your time to accept the help He sends your way. His Word tells us that we are to:
Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2
This doesn’t excuse us from our responsibilities but rather encourages us to keep on going knowing that He is our ultimate helper and that He has also placed people in our lives to help us along the way. We are not alone in this walk, He is with us every step of the way as long as we are inviting Him to come along.
Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. Psalms 55:22 NKJV
The Lord is the one that strengthens us and supports us. Rather than putting something off, seek the Lord through prayer and His word for guidance so that you can accomplish what you know needs to get done. We just need to take the first step and He will help us to accomplish those things that we need to get done in life. Remember that you are not alone, you have a helper. Also remember that you are not a pro at procrastinating, but rather causing yourself unnecessary stress by prolonging getting to it. Be encouraged that you have the best helper, the Holy Spirit that sustains you.
