Seeking Wisdom

There are a lot of different meanings to the word wisdom. One may think of wisdom as knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense, or a combination of all. The wisdom the Bible talks about is a way of life, a skill in our walk with the Lord. Wisdom is something that we obtain… we need to go after wisdom. But how do we obtain this wisdom? Keep on reading…

Know Him

Get into His word and find out for yourself who God is. It is great to attend church, listen to preachings, read books, and/or read blogs (like this one😊), but that should be accompanied by spending intimate time in His word. The only way to know Him is to get into His word, after all He is the Word.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 NKJV

When we enter into a new relationship (a healthy relationship) with a significant other, we get to know that person and  we get to learn their likes and dislikes. If we truly care about the other person, we try to avoid doing those things which they don’t like, or at least not do those things purposefully. In fact, in the beginning of a relationship, we often look for approval because we are trying to get the other person to be interested in us. Well, God is already interested in you, and with Him we don’t have to sugar coat. He knows everything about us, even the number of hairs on our head. (Matthew 10:30 NKJV). Yes, even if we shaved it all off, he doesn’t lose count.

In the process of knowing Him, we obtain the wisdom we seek.

For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6 NKJV

Think about Him

Instead of thinking what other people would do, ask yourself what would Jesus do? (Yes, I know you may be thinking, “what a cliche”…but it works) Again, the only way to know what Jesus would do…is to get into His word. Otherwise,  you will just be following what someone else tells you to do without knowing the reason behind it, or even believing in what you are doing, due to lack of understanding.

Going back to the example of a relationship, when you care about someone you think how your actions will affect the other person, and if you care about them you choose the action that won’t hurt them. This is having wisdom, being able to distinguish from right and wrong and choosing what is right…or the truth which is God’s word. Wisdom from the Lord teaches us to make choices in life that end up benefiting us.

Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things; For my mouth will speak truth. Proverbs 8:6-7 NKJV

Be Willing

In order to obtain wisdom we need to be willing…willing to answer the call of wisdom.

Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open squares. She cries out in the chief concourses,  At the opening of the gates in the city She speaks her words. Proverbs 1:20-21 NKJV

As we can see from this scripture, wisdom calls out in various places….this means that wisdom is waiting for each and everyone of us. Wisdom is available to all of us…but it is up to us to answer its call. How do we answer?

So that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; Yes if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God Proverbs 2:2-5 NKJV

Obtaining wisdom is an active choice, something that we must want and search for…it requires from us our active participation.

Fear the Lord

To fear the Lord doesn’t mean to be scared of Him…but rather to know Him, think about Him, be willing and ultimately RESPECT Him.  When we respect the Lord we strive to do those things which please the Lord…this doesn’t mean to think about a long list of things you can’t do. In fact, the Bible says that the entire law is fulfilled in one command, and that is to love your neighbor as yourself (Galatians 5:14 NIV).

If we know Him

If we think about Him

If we are willing

If we fear the Lord…then we are on track to obtaining wisdom from the Lord.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7 NKJV

Obtaining wisdom is not knowing about the Word more than others or having the Bible memorized, it is a skill that we apply to our everyday step with Jesus. Wisdom is important because it guides us through our choices in life… and those choices lead us to consequences. Consequences are not always a bad thing, they are simply a result of our choices. Obtaining wisdom leads us to making the choices that produce good consequences…success.

I love those who love me, And those who seek me find me. With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver. I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, bestowing a rich inheritance on those who love me and making their treasuries full. Proverbs 8:17-21 NIV

I encourage you to seek out wisdom so that, as I am attempting to do, you can grow and take the required step to becoming closer to God.
